Southern Nye County Search and Rescue
About So. Nye County Search & Rescue
The Southern Nye County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Unit is a volunteer arm of the Sheriff's Office involved in performing the Sheriff's statutorily mandated function of conducting or coordinating search and rescue operations within the county. Search and Rescue operations are supervised by a deputy assigned as the Search and Rescue Coordinator. The Unit is trained by the Sheriff's Office to provide vital search and rescue services for the residents of Nye County, which encompasses approximately 18,159 square miles of diverse and sometimes very remote rugged terrain. Southern Nye county Search and rescue also performs Sheriffs office special assignments for community events such as Halloween traffic control, Fall festival parking assistance and foot patrol during the event, 4th of July traffic control in addition to assisting any other first responder agency's that may need our assistance.
 
Our Beginings

Our Unit was establish in 1963 with our first set of volunteers.  Over the years the unit’s membership has continued to grow as our County’s population has expanded.  Our Unit is currently comprised of over 20 active members who are trained and on call 24 hours a day seven days a week 365 days a year to help those that may have become stranded, lost, injured or worse.

Our Unit is broken down into specialty teams such as Ground Team (man-trackers and rope technicians), ATV Team (quads),4 Wheel Drive Team (jeeps), Communication Team (radio operators)Map Team (navigators. We are always seeking new members so please visit our “Getting Involved” page to learn more about supporting Southern Nye County SAR from being an active volunteer to donor or sponsor. Our current volunteers have varied back grounds and many are retired law enforcement, retired military, medical professionals, avid outdoor enthusiasts and long-time volunteers of the Unit.
